Smith Will Meet Davis Saturday

North Carolina pledge Jonathan Smith will unofficially visit Chapel Hill this weekend to meet new Tar Heel head football coach Butch Davis.

"He and Coach ‘Thig' [Tommy Thigpen] were going to try and do a home visit and unfortunately they couldn't make it because of [Davis'] schedule," said Smith. "So, Coach Thig' invited me to the campus Wednesday and Saturday to meet Coach Davis. I think I'm going to go this Saturday to the campus, because I wasn't able to make it to the Carolina-Ohio State basketball game."

Smith, a 6-foot-2 195-pound athlete from Durham (N.C.) Hillside, called Thigpen Thursday morning to confirm his Saturday unofficial trip to Chapel Hill.

Although he insists his verbal commitment is firm, Smith could visit other schools, pending the outcome of this weekend's trip to Chapel Hill.

"I think I might consider some other schools just to keep my options open," said Smith. "I want to find out what's going on with the coaching staff at Carolina. Once I find out what's going on with the coaching staff, then I'll probably have a better idea on what I want to do."

Under Bunting, Smith, who could play multiple positions at the collegiate level, was consider a safety prospect. As of right now, Smith isn't sure where he fits into Davis' scheme of things.

"As of now, my [scholarship] offer is still solid," said Smith. "They still want me at North Carolina. As far as I'm concerned, everything's pretty good."

For Hillside High School, Smith starred as a weakside linebacker where he collected 90 tackles and five interceptions during his senior season. He was also used on a limited basis as a tight end.
