"I was really pleased with the improvement on the defensive end of the floor, except for the last eight minutes of the second half where we didn't do a good job getting back and getting the proper man picked up. We held them to 23 percent shooting in the second half, and I liked our work ethic and hopefully we'll continue to build on it tomorrow night."
On Brandan Wright -
"He's just having a fantastic year for us. If I can get him to do one thing, it'd be to have a little more sense of urgency. He runs one speed and we need to get him to change gears a little bit. But you can't be a nicer young man than he is."
On FAU being coached by former KU player Rex Walters -
"This is the first time that I can remember that I've ever coached against a youngster that I recruited and coached. It's going to be hard. I told our staff today, just imagine 15 years from now if I'm still coaching and you guys are coaching, too, and you want to beat my rear end so badly. This is one of the most competitive youngsters I've ever been around. He played for us for two years, all-conference first-team both years. ... I love him to death. At the end of the game tomorrow, hopefully we'll win and I'll feel good, but as soon as I see that youngster walking down to the scorer's table it'll be a hard feeling because I love him like a son."
Evaluating the progress of Deon Thompson and Alex Stepheson -
"Both Deon and Alex are progressing. Just trying to get everyone to understand that there are a lot of guys that aren't going to make that huge splash coming in. I watched part of a great game on Saturday -- Wisconsin and Pittsburgh -- and the Wisconsin kid named Brian Butch that we tried to recruit at Kansas and North Carolina tried to recruit as well, his first two or three years wasn't that successful, battled some injuries, didn't play very much. Yet he had a huge game on national television this year in his fourth year with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Sometimes big kids come at a different rate than other people and I think both Deon and Alex are really going to be good players for us. ... I think that both will be fantastic players for us. Deon's going to have a little bit more ability to score and Alex is going to have a big more ability right now to rebound the basketball."
On scheduling -
"... Last year we went back to the West Coast because I wanted to recruit the West Coast. This year we're going to St. Louis, next year early in the season we're going to Nashville, Tenn. for Brandan and going to Philadelphia for Wayne. We've got to have 17, 18, 19 home games or else those other sports [at UNC] would be non-existent."
