Powell Released From Staff

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Assistant coach Andre Powell was informed Tuesday afternoon that he would not be retained, a source close to the situation informed Inside Carolina and a UNC spokesperson later confirmed.

Powell, who's been on the UNC staff for six seasons, coached running backs and special teams in 2006.

He is the sixth assistant to be let go by new head coach Butch Davis, joining wide receivers coach Dave Brock, defensive end coach Danny Pearman, offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, assistant head coach John Gutekunst and offensive line coach Mark Weber.

Davis has thus far announced the hiring of three new coaches -- Fresno State's Steve Hagen, Arizona's Charlie Williams and Nebraska's John Blake.
