Merletti, a Cleveland (Ohio) St. Ignatius product, was asked to visit this weekend in particular to better bond with members of his recruiting class.
"The coaches invited me up," said Merletti. "There was going to be several recruits there from my class and they wanted me to meet a couple of them. They really wanted me to meet my roommate that they picked out for me – Zack Pianalto. So I came down for the weekend."
Since the visit was of the unofficial variety, Merletti was able to stay over the 48-hour limit imposed on official visits. He arrived Friday morning and left Sunday night and basically was granted free reign to do what he wanted.
"I kind of stuck with the other recruits mostly," said Merletti. "But one of the days I got to workout instead doing one of the tours."
North Carolina still hasn't determined what position Merletti, a 5-foot-11 190-pound athlete, will play once on campus.
"Nothing's really changed, it's still the same – running back, wide receiver, or DB," said Merletti. "They didn't really talk about it, just kind of left it alone."
Firm in his commitment, Merletti's focus now is preparing for his freshman season at UNC. Given St. Ignatius' tough academic reputation, Merletti shouldn't have any problems qualifying.
Currently, Merletti is running track for St. Ignatius to help stay in shape.
