"He is going to Virginia Tech," Gil Carroll said. "He is really happy with the staff there, and the school.
"He fell in love with Virginia Tech, and he's talked to the coaches and assured them he's coming."
Carroll, who transferred from Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park to Jacksonville (Fla) Jackson, is considered one of the top prep linemen in the nation, but appears to have made his final choice. Gil Carroll coached at Myers Park for five years before taking his current job at Jackson High, but still keeps up with the players he coached in North Carolina.
Carroll's dad said his son still gets letters from several SEC and ACC schools.
"He gets letters from Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina, and he gets letter from Clemson, North Carolina, N.C. State and Florida State," Gil Carroll said. "That's eight good schools there."
But it appears his decision has been made and he will join the Hokies next year.
Carroll said his son has made a smooth transition to his school and is doing well, though he has noticed a difference in the speed of players in Florida compared to the Myers Park area in Charlotte.
"There is more speed here than in the southern part of charlotte (because West Charlotte and Independence were not in the Myers Park's district)," Gil Carroll said. "He was in the slow part of Charlotte, but here in this 4-A district, there is lots of speed in this conference. But when he gets to college, everyone will have speed."
Carroll will start on both sides of the ball for his dad at Jacksonville Jackson.
"He will play anywhere on the O line this season." On defense, he will primarily hold down the left tackle spot, but will rotate at other line positions.
Carroll will visit Virginia Tech in September, but that visit will come as an unofficial trip on a Friday after Jackson has a Thursday night game.
As for hobbies outside of football, Carroll likes computers, enjoys riding jet skis, hunting and playing golf. In the Northeastern part of Florida, he has access to all that. He is taking some college prep classes this year.
"He enjoys weekends here," Carroll said. "He's only 30 minutes from Pointe Vedra Beach, and several other beaches. "I think he's enjoying spending time with his father too."
