Gupton Picks Carolina

On the heels of receiving a North Carolina scholarship offer last week, Brian Gupton verbally committed to North Carolina.

"I committed [late last week]," said Gupton. "It was a lot of things, but I just wanted to play football at North Carolina."

Gupton, a 6-foot-2 190-pounder, is the second wide receiver from Nashville (Tenn.) Pearl-Cohn to verbally commit to UNC. Teammate Rashad Mason pledged to the Tar Heels days after Gupton.

At North Carolina, Gupton felt that he could make a name for himself.

"I felt like me and Rashad could come in and make a difference," said Gupton.

According to Gupton, he and Mason are two of four wide receivers that North Carolina is hoping to bring in with the 2007 recruiting class, though Gupton said he may also get practice reps on the defensive side of the ball upon his arrival.

"There's a couple more wide receivers that they are bringing in and I'll have to work hard like them to see playing time," said Gupton. "UNC hasn't really talked about [red shirting]. I just plan on working hard."

Although North Carolina is his only Division I-A scholarship offer, Gupton does hold plenty of tenders from lower division schools.

During his senior season, Gupton caught 16 passes for 500 yards. He also recorded seven interceptions and 30 tackles.
