Austin: 'Watch Out for the Tar Heels!'

Marvin Austin announced live on national television Wednesday that he will attend North Carolina.

"With a lot of hard thought from my coaches, my family, my teammates next year I will be attending the University of North Carolina," said Austin as he pulled a Tar Heel hat from a briefcase and placed it on his head.

Austin, a 6-foot-2 300-pound defensive tackle from Washington (D.C.) Ballou, selected the Tar Heels over Florida State, Southern Cal, and Tennessee.

"I just think it was the best decision for my family, for myself," said Austin. "You know, academically I think I can do a lot of things there.

"I just took football out of the equation just in case anything happens – I might get hurt, anything like that. I just took football out of the equation and said ‘Where do I want to be the next four years of my life being there, living there, and going to school there?' And it just came down to North Carolina and Florida State.

"And I thought about it, prayed on it [and] North Carolina was the best decision for me. I've talked to Coach [John] Blake, Coach [Butch] Davis – all those guys down there – and I think they're going to do some good things down there. And they're getting a lot of good recruits down there.

After transferring from Washington (D.C.) Coolidge, Austin helped lead Ballou to their first DCIAA Title. On the year, Austin collected 85 tackles including 30 for a loss and 17 sacks.
