Heels in Hunt for Tenn. OT

Thus far, Barrett Jones has received 12 scholarship offers. However, no school communicates with the 6-foot-5, 260-pound offensive tackle as much as North Carolina.

"I talk to Coach [Charlie] Williams and also I talk to the offensive coordinator, Coach [John] Shoop," said Jones. "Coach Williams is my recruiting guy and we talk [on the phone] every Thursday night and we have some great conversations. He's a real nice guy."

Recruiting and football seldom comes up during Jones' conversations with Williams.

"Normally [we talk about] different stuff," said Jones. "We talk about basketball, we talk about football – spring practice, and just life in general. It's not all about football."

The constant communication has naturally created a bond between Jones and Williams.

"I have a great relationship with him," said Jones. "He's a great guy and I enjoy talking to him every week."

While a shoulder injury (a torn labrum) forced Jones to miss half of his junior season, when he was on the field he anchored Memphis (Tenn.) Evangelical Christian's offensive line from his left tackle position. He also played defensive end.

In addition to UNC, Jones hold scholarship offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Miami, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. He has also been verbally offered by Florida and is waiting on the official paperwork.

Over the spring, Jones has made unofficial visits to Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt.

Jones is putting his traveling on hold in the spring, but will resume trips this summer. Possible summer destinations include Florida, Miami, North Carolina, and Notre Dame. Most stops will just be your regular unofficial visits, but Jones might entertain a camp or two.

By the end of the summer, Jones, who doesn't claim any favorites, will narrow down his list of potential schools to five.

"I'm looking for – obviously – good football," said Jones. "Also, education is important to me. And the people are really important, because you're going to be hanging out with them for the next five years of your life – so that's real important."

Jones isn't sure when he'll make a verbal commitment.

"[I'll decide] whenever I know," said Jones. "I want to make it as soon as I can, but I want to make the right one, too. I don't want to rush things, but I don't want to prolong things."

Given the strong communication – among other things, Jones said North Carolina is definitely a player in his recruitment.

"They obviously have a good school," said Jones. "They have a program on the rise – so that's exciting. They're definitely in the hunt."
