Pledge Made to Endow Head UNC FB Coaching Position

CHAPEL HILL --- Joe Maddux, a 1952 University of North Carolina alumnus and owner of Maddux Supply Company, will have a $500,000 pledge made in his honor to endow the head football coaching position at his alma mater. The $500,000 pledge is toward of a goal of $1 million to endow the position.

A reception was held in Greensboro earlier to announce the pledge, made by Mr. Maddux's friends and family. The Educational Foundation proposed the creation of the endowment, which will provide support for future salary increases, program development and basic operating expenses for UNC football.

Maddux Supply Company is an electrical distributorship based in 13 cities in the Southeast. Mr. Maddux has served as host to Carolina's football coaches at the annual East-West High School All-Star Game for the past 35 years.

"Joe Maddux is a great friend of the University and our football program," says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. "His passion for the Tar Heels has shown through for more than 50 years and his support of his alma mater has never wavered. He truly wants our football program to be among the finest programs in the country and recognized this endowment as a way to support that goal. What is so special is that many of Joe's friends and family have helped create this initial pledge in his honor."

A native of Atlanta, Mr. Maddux was raised in Raleigh and attended Broughton High School. After graduating from UNC, he worked for several years at Westinghouse in the student training program.

Mr. Maddux and his wife, Carolyn, have two daughters. Meriweather graduated from Carolina in August 2001 and works in Atlanta. Neil has started her senior year at Princeton.

"I am honored to be the head coach at a time when people are working toward endowing this position," says John Bunting. "In my short association with Joe Maddux I can see in his eyes the passion he feels for Carolina athletics. He loves our football program and the direction we're heading."
