Merletti, who played running back and defensive back for Cleveland (Ohio) St. Ignatius, says he is willing to play wherever the team needs him. However, he would prefer to be in the offensive backfield.
"I'd like to play running back – that's my favorite position – but I'll do anything the team needs," said Merletti.
Additionally, the running back position seems to provide the best opportunity.
"From what I know, the running back position, nobody really has any game experience," said Merletti. "I guess that's up for grabs.
"But whatever the coaches want me to do – if they want to redshirt me – I'm fine with."
Since helping St. Ignatius' football team to an uncharacteristic 6-4 season, Merletti has been running indoor and spring track.
"Track is going very well," said Merletti. "Actually we have one of the top five or six 4x100 relay times in the state."
In addition to the 4x100, Merletti runs the 4x200. Track has kept Merletti at his football playing weight of 185 pounds at 5-foot-11.
"I've been working out, but mostly just running with track," said Merletti. "[UNC] did send me their workout that they want me to be using. But they said if you're involved in a spring sport, just do what you can and don't over do it."
Merletti is fully qualified and will enroll at UNC for the second summer session, departing for Chapel Hill on June 21st.
