Maddox Drops by UNC

For the second consecutive weekend, UNC assistant Tommy Thigpen hosted an elite in-state linebacker for a one-on-one unofficial visit.

"I was there [Saturday]," said Duane Maddox. "Coach ‘Thig' [Thigpen] asked me to come. He wanted to show me some stuff."

Maddox, a 6-foot-1 220-pound linebacker from Shelby (N.C.) Crest, arrived on campus late. Therefore, his visit was limited to spending time in the football office with Thigpen, his primary recruiter.

"To tell you the truth, he didn't really talk about recruiting, he was more trying to get to know me," said Maddox. "He told me how it is in college like the dos and don'ts in college."

Saturday's visit marks Maddox's last trip of the spring. He now focuses on a busy summer schedule.

"I want to take some visits, but I probably won't go to many camps," said Maddox.

Florida is Maddox's only definite summer destination.

Maddox, who holds six scholarship offers (Alabama, Clemson, East Carolina, Marshall, N.C. State, UNC, and South Carolina), doesn't claim any favorites and doesn't know when he'll make a verbal commitment.

"I'm probably going to make a decision whenever it's best," said Maddox, who used to list Clemson, UNC, and N.C. State as his favorites.

Maddox does admit that North Carolina's chances to land the three-star prospect are "pretty good."

"I like the basketball team and it seems like a pretty good school to go to," said Maddox. "And they have pretty good coaches. I'm developing a good relationship with Coach Thig."

At the Shrine Bowl Combine held in Asheville, Maddox clocked a 4.58-second 40-yard dash and rep'd 185 pounds 24 times. He also ran a 4.50-second shuttle and vertically jumped 28.1 inches.
