Powell All Set for UNC

Tydreke Powell has learned that he is now qualified academically and has been approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse to enroll this summer and play this fall at North Carolina.

"Everything is good," said Powell. "I'm just ready to get out of school on June 11th and head to North Carolina.

"They sent me a letter needing my transcripts. We sent it in and it's good."

Powell, a 6-foot-4 305-pound defensive tackle from Ahoskie (N.C.) Hertford Co., expects to receive the chance to earn playing time during his freshman season.

"We have guys coming back, but Coach [John] Blake, he's a new coach and he was telling me he's going to play the best," said Powell. "All I got to do is go in there and give it all I've got."

Powell is still trying to decide what number he wants to wear at UNC.

"I was talking to my mother and she said ‘You might want to get something different than 44,'" said Powell. "So I was thinking that 99 looked really good on me during the Shrine Bowl. I might try to get the same number I wore at the Shrine Bowl – 99."

However, the No. 99 is retired at UNC for former All-American lineman George Barclay (1933-34).
