"He said I fit right into their defensive system, because I'm such an athlete."
Simmons, a 6-foot-2 200-pounder who clocked a 4.50-second 40-yard dash at Scout.com's Combine, is being recruited as a safety.
While UNC may be on the verge of offering Simmons, 30 other schools have already done so. His list is highlighted by offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, and Southern Cal.
Before leaving Banneker, Blake invited Simmons to the Tar Heels' summer camp for further evaluation. Simmons accepted, including UNC among his many camping stops.
"I'm going to hit up everybody in the southeast plus Ohio State and Michigan," said Simmons.
Heading into a summer full of traveling, Simmons is favoring three schools – Miami, Alabama, and Florida.
"Miami, I don't know what it is," said Simmons. "It's a team I grew up watching and I've always wanted to play for.
"Alabama, I went down to their junior day and I enjoyed myself. The coaches and everybody were cool.
"And Florida, I went down to their junior day, too, and it was the same thing – everybody was cool and I enjoyed myself."
Simmons said he is looking to graduate in December. Therefore, he would like to make a verbal commitment before the start of his senior season.
In addition to junior days at Florida and Alabama, Simmons has attended South Carolina's spring game and unofficially visited Auburn.
Simmons stars at both quarterback and safety for Banneker and earned All-State honors as a junior. He collected 89 tackles, an interception, and 1,500 all-purpose yards.
