"He texted me this morning," Shumpert said Tuesday morning of the method in which he received the Tar Heel scholarship offer from the Tar Heel head coach.
Shumpert told Inside Carolina a week ago that he would consider UNC if they offered. "If they offer then I'll be taking an unofficial," he said on July 2. "I have a lot of respect for North Carolina, but until then I can't really take them seriously."
Now that the offer has arrived, Shumpert said he will indeed seriously consider the Tar Heel program.
"I told North Carolina that because they offered I'd take a closer look," he said Tuesday.
Wisconsin, Marquette, Illinois, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Clemson are some of the schools that have been recruiting Shumpert for an extended period and comprised his list heading into the big summer events.
His next stop this summer is the adidas Three Stripes event on the Notre Dame campus later this week.
Shumpert is ranked the No. 4 shooting guard in the 2008 class and the No. 15 prospect overall by Scout.com.
At the James Camp, Shumpert solidified his reputation as an elite guard. He showed off his versatile arsenal, hitting deep jumpers off the catch and off the dribble, as well as attacking the basket, going after it on defense and showing that he's capable of finishing with ease with his off hand (left).
"When you look at Shumpert, you're talking about a guy who is a quality combo guard with the ability to play the two and even slide over and play some one," said IC's Eric Bossi, who attended the James event. "He's an excellent outside shooter, which is his calling guard and he handles it well and is a good decision maker. He doesn't force it and lets the game come to him."
