Q&A with Braden Hanson

Having solidified his decision to attend North Carolina, new Tar Heel commitment Braden Hanson talked with Inside Carolina on Wednesday morning ...

So, how'd the decision to commit come about?

"Maybe a few days ago I kind of made up my mind and I felt that my heart was at Carolina. So I started going around calling some of the coaches that have offered me scholarships. I told them that I made my decision that I want to play for Carolina.

"I think I'm just as excited as all the coaches are at Carolina to have me. It's a big load off and I'm glad I made my decision."

What was it about UNC that won you over?

"In the end, the opportunity to play for my home state, get a great education, be able to play for Coach [John] Shoop and Coach [Butch] Davis and it's an up-and-coming program -- I couldn't really pass it up. I feel like hopefully I'm going to have a lot of success there and they're going to help me become the best player I can be. It's very exciting."

How did the commitment actually go down?

"I talked to Coach Shoop a few days ago. I kind of told him I was leaning towards making a decision. I reaffirmed that yesterday and I went ahead and told him. I've been telling some other coaches what I was going to do. I left a message for Coach Davis, but he's on vacation."

What did Coach Shoop say?

"He said he was fired up. He was glad. He said we're going to have a lot of fun working together."

What are UNC's plans for you?

"We didn't get into that at all yesterday. We might do that in the near future. He pretty much told me everything I need to know – the best guy is going to play. If I'm the best guy, I'll play. If not, I'll be on the bench with everyone else.

"I've heard they're going to redshirt me because I need to fill out my body more. I don't really care one way or another."

How did your recent family vacation affect your decision?

"Being with my family for a week, thinking about it, having some time to get away from recruiting – my phone didn't work so I wasn't getting any text messages – the more I thought about it, the more I realized Carolina was the place for me."

With recruiting out of the way, what's the next step for you now?

"I need to get a hair cut. I think that's the biggest thing on my agenda right now. I don't have anything important I need to do anymore, so I don't know what I'm going to do with my life now that recruiting is done.

"I'm going to work on my senior season. We had our first passing [league] last night so everything went according to plan."

You definitely sound relieved.

"Yeah, I'm pretty relieved. It was fun while it lasted, but there's a time where it needs to end. And I think now is a pretty good time."

Do you have any plans to help UNC with the remainder of their recruiting class?

"Coach Shoop has been talking to me about guys they're looking at. We were talking about receivers and he said they're working on some guys in Virginia. I'm sure in the next couple of days I'll get on the phone with him and find out if I can help out in any way – get some numbers and shoot some texts."
