Tar Heel Pros update

An update on North Carolina grads playing overseas.

Kris Lang is making the most of his time in Wloclawek, Poland. Kris scored 17 points (8-13 FG, 1-4 FT) in a 100-47 victory on Saturday as Wloclawek improved to 3-0. Lang is averaging 12.7 ppg and 6.0 rpg.

Konrad Jaskolski, the editor of Anwil Wloclawek's official website, informed IC via e-mail that Kris has learned to say "good morning" (dzien dobry) and "thank you" (dziekuje) in Polish.

"Kris always smiles, and is always first," Jaskolski said when asked about Lang. "Other players come in an hour or an hour-and-a-half before games, Kris is at least 2 hours before! He is even earlier than the security guards and attendants and has to open the locker room himself. Unbelievable at first, but everybody got used to it."

Lang was interviewed by the Polish basketball magazine Super BASKET and Jaskolski has translated it from Polish to English.

"I thought that Anwil Wloclwek in Poland was the right place for me," Lang told the magazine. "At this time I can say that they have great fans. People are very nice, they say nice things. Such a good atmosphere is very important.

"I'm a pro, basketball is my job. I play where they want me and need me. It is not so easy to play in the NBA, even if you've got nice stats. Of course, the dream of every player is to play there, but you can play in the NBA after a good season in Europe just as well. I want to play a lot, as much as I can, that's most important to me. I'm young, and that's why I think that everything is still in front of me. I have a chance to play a lot here, and still improve my basketball skills."

* It was an eventful week for Derrick Phelps and Donald Williams in France. They started with a Limoges CSP evening practice that was open to the public.

According to csp.basket.com, Williams and Phelps were in very good form. "One could see that Williams was very skillful from more than 5 meters, and Phelps was a very good manager and distributor of the basketball," reported the Limoges fan site.

The following day Williams had his short-term contract extended for the season. "Based on his performances in a variety of exhibition games, one can only be delighted by this news," reported csp.basketzone.com.

Following a 20-point effort Williams was sidelined with a wrist injury for the rest of the week so he would be ready for the start of the French Pro A season on October 5. Phelps was back in action after suffering a knee injury during training camp, scoring 17 points on Saturday.

* Ed Cota, of Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania), played a "friendly" game in Germany against ALBA Berlin and fellow-Tar Heel Henrik Rodl. Cota exploded for 26 points, as he went 10-of-12 from the field (3-3 3PT). ALBA Berlin won the high-scoring affair, 90-88.

The Berlin website highlighted Cota in a pregame press release as "A graduate of the reknowned University of North Carolina (Michael Jordan, Henrik Rodl ... )."
