UNC Increasing Interest in Thomas

North Carolina has been recruiting Chase Thomas through mail for several months now. Recently, though, area recruiter Tommy Thigpen called the 6-foot-4, 210-pound jumbo athlete from Marietta (Ga.) Walton.

"He just wants to get me up to campus and check out a game," Thomas said. "I hope to get up there for a visit, but I'm not sure when. He wanted me to come up [last weekend] against Miami or [this weekend]."

Thus far, Thomas has taken one official visit – Stanford on September 22nd (versus Oregon). He has also unofficially visited Auburn for a game (versus Kansas State), and before the season he visited Georgia Tech and South Carolina.

UNC has not extended Thomas a scholarship offer. He has, though, collected 22 offers including ones from Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, South Carolina, and Stanford.

With plenty of options, Thomas has begun to assemble a favorites list.

"I've kind of narrowed it down to Stanford, Auburn, and Georgia Tech as the top three," said Thomas. "And there's a couple others ones. My top five would have to also include LSU and Tennessee."

Thomas, who plans to commit before the end of the season, says his favorites list isn't firm and that "there's always a possibility that other schools could pop in there." UNC is a strong candidate to enter the race.

"[UNC] has real good academics and Butch Davis is going to turn that program around," Thomas said. "And [being in the] ACC, they'll play a lot of games close to home and it's got good competition."

In addition to academics and location, Thomas is looking for early playing time and a strong comfort level at the school.

Thomas is being looked at as a defensive end/outside linebacker type by just about every school including UNC.

For Walton, Thomas plays wide receiver and defensive end, where he has accumulated nine sacks, over 30 tackles, and a couple of receptions. During his junior season, Thomas recorded 82 tackles (46 solo) including 14 for a loss and ten sacks, and caught six passes for 129 yards earning him All-Cobb County first team honors.
