"I was really shocked," Cheek said. "The place was sold out with like 20,000 people there. I'd never been in an atmosphere that big. As soon as I walked into the place people had shirts out with my name on it."
As is usually the case with ‘Late Night," the Heels used the event as a showcase for their program. They had a number of prospects on campus and Cheek said he enjoyed hanging out with the other recruits.
"There was Larry Drew, Ed Davis, Kendall (Marshall), the Wear brothers and I got to get to know all of them better and hang out with them," he said.
While the ‘Late Night' event was among the highlights of his weekend trip, so was his one-on-one chat with Roy Williams.
"Before I left me and him chatted and he was telling me that he would love for me to go there and commit. He was telling me that I'm a special player and that he would love to have me in his program. He said I reminded him of Paul Piece."
"I was very shocked," he said when asked for his take on the conversation. "I would never expect someone like him to say something like that to me."
Cheek, who is ranked No. 7 overall in the 2009 class, took in UNC's first practice of the season on Saturday and saw similarities to his team's practices.
"The way they run practice is the same way that we run practice," he said.
Prior to Cheek's visit, there was speculation – fueled by his comments -- that he might make a decision during or shortly thereafter his Chapel Hill stay. Following the trip, he decided that he wants to wait out the process and see a few more schools.
"North Carolina is my number one choice right now, but I'm not in a rush. Me and my family have been thinking about it and there's no reason for me to be in a rush right now. I'm going to wait."
Other than Carolina, Cheek is getting strong interest from Kansas, Georgetown, Marquette, Georgia Tech, Florida, Villanova, Wake Forest and Ohio State.
"New schools call me everyday," Cheek said. "I'm just trying to wait. I'm going to try and take some more visits, but I don't know when yet."
