UNC Offers Blue

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. --- A.J. Blue's wishes were answered Wednesday when North Carolina, his leader, extended him a scholarship offer.

"Tuesday, Coach Lovett called me," said Blue, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound athlete from Dallas (N.C.) North Gaston. "He said there should be a package coming in the mail from Coach [Butch] Davis. He said ‘When you open it, call me.'

"I opened it and read it and it was a [scholarship offer]. And I called him and he asked me how I felt. I told him I was fired up. He said he was fired up."

Since attending the Tar Heels' summer camp, Blue has been strongly favoring UNC. However, even with the offer now in hand, he has yet to verbally commit.

"Definitely, I'm going to commit," Blue said. "I'm going to commit – no matter what."

Blue is a solid SAT score away from putting himself in adequate academic standing. He expects his SAT score from the early October testing to arrive this week.

If Blue receives a sufficient SAT score, he figures to commit to Lovett when he calls this coming week.

"They're taking a chance with me and they're putting themselves in a position where they can get hurt," Blue said. "… They gave me a scholarship when I haven't completed everything [academically], yet.

"I want to hold up my end of the bargain, and then repay them for taking a chance on me."

Lovett also told Blue that they will make plans for his UNC official visit during Lovett's weekly phone call. Blue hopes to schedule the trip during the season. If not, he still plans to attend UNC's last two home games – Maryland and Duke.

The one topic that has yet to be brought up is Blue's collegiate position.

"Really, not much [talk about position]," Blue said. "They just told me that I am a player that likes to get into the end zone. And they need those types of players… They didn't really say position-wise or nothing like that, they just told me I can help the team. That's all I'm looking for – to help the team."

Blue stars at quarterback for North Gaston and has led the Wildcats to an 8-1 record (5-0 in conference).

Friday night, Blue was pulled at halftime after the six scoring drives he orchestrated helped North Gaston to a 50-6 lead on East Gaston. Blue rushed six times for 94 yards and three touchdowns, and threw for 48 yards on four-of-eight passing in one half of play.

On the year, Blue has rushed for 13 touchdowns and 1,362 yards on 137 carries (9.9-yard average). He has also completed 53-of-126 passes for 988 yards, four interceptions, and nine touchdowns.
