Under New Direction: South Carolina State hired Tim Carter as its men's basketball coach back in May. The Witchita, Kan. native was an assistant to Leonard Hamilton at Florida State last season. He spent 11 seasons as head coach at Texas-San Antonio, leading that program to two NCAA Tournament appearances. In an unusual series of events, Carter was hired five weeks after the Bulldogs fired former head coach Jamal Brown for what the school termed as violations of the university's obligations under the federal Title IX law.
Prized Recruit: Johnson earned recognition as the national Junior College Region XV Player of the Year last season. The Bronx, N.Y. native averaged 21.7 points and led Division III in rebounds with 14.5 per game while leading Sullivan County Community College to an undefeated season and a national championship.
Season to Date: S.C. State enters Tuesday's contest 0-3 on the season, losing road games at South Carolina and Old Dominion before falling to Jacksonville in its home opener last Wednesday. The Bulldogs are averaging 61.7 points and 18.3 turnovers per game. Junior Chris Miller-Williams has been the lone bright spot for the Bulldogs, averaging 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game from his power forward position.
Poor Shooting: The Bulldogs have five players averaging more than 20 minutes per game this season, and that quintet has struggled from the floor, connecting on just 34.1 (43-of-126) percent of their field goal attempts. The statistics get even worse behind the three-point line – 23.2 percent on 13-of-56 shooting.
Series History: This contest marks the first meeting between these two programs.
