The coaches also confirmed the date of Mackey's UNC official visit, which has been set for January 18th.
Mackey will make the trip to UNC with fellow teammate and UNC target Quinton Coples. The two linemen will also take their official visits to Florida State (Dec. 7th) and NC State (Jan. 11th) together.
"[Coples] likes schools that I like," Mackey said. "Me and him are like brothers. I got love for him.
"We've talked about going to the same school together. But if he [commits] to a school it doesn't mean I'm going to commit there."
Like Coples, Mackey is a high school senior playing on Hargrave's post-graduate team. He transferred from Newark (Del.) Christiana prior to the football season in an effort to improve his academic situation.
UNC began to recruit Mackey shortly after he landed at Hargrave.
"When I came up here, they noticed me from my play," Mackey said. "I talk to Coach [John] Blake every now and then – not too much, once a month. He's a great dude."
Mackey, a 6-foot-4, 280-pounder, starred at offensive tackle at Christiana. However, he was moved to defensive end once he arrived at Hargrave. UNC – as well as other schools – plan to keep him at defensive end.
"Coach Blake, he likes my speed and quickness," Mackey said. "That's really what I use to try to set myself apart from others."
With the absence of campus visits, Mackey isn't claiming a leader.
"Really, there's no favorite," Mackey said. "I like all schools as far as NC State, North Carolina, Florida State, and Virginia, right now, they're my four. They have great coaching staffs."
Mackey, who has collected over 30 scholarship offers, has been offered by all four of his favorites.
Hargrave held a combine a day prior to its Winter Workout. During the combine, Mackey recorded a 4.7-second 40-yard dash, 4.34-second 20-yard shuttle, 26-inch vertical, and 14 bench reps of 225 pounds.
