Dennard on Verge of Commitment

Alphonzo Dennard, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound cornerback from Rochelle (Ga.) Wilcox County, took his official visit to North Carolina over the weekend.

Sunday, 10:00 p.m.

Alphonzo Dennard had planned to commit to North Carolina with a telephone call once he got back from his UNC visit on Sunday night. However, as he arrived home late in the evening, he said it looks like he'll get a chance to commit to the UNC staff in person.

Head coach Butch Davis and assistant coach Tommy Thigpen are going to meet with Dennard Monday.

"They're going to come to my house in the morning," Dennard said. "They're going to fly down to my house and talk about it then."

Does he plan to commit during the in-home meeting?

"Yes, sir," Dennard said.

Alphonzo Dennard didn't verbally commit during his North Carolina official visit, but he plans to do so Sunday night.

"I'm going to call later on tonight and make a commitment," Dennard said on Sunday. "I want to talk to my mom and my coach about it first."

Throughout the recruiting process, Dennard has collected scholarship offers from Alabama, UAB, Central Michigan, Clemson, UNC, Purdue, Troy, and Western Michigan. A couple of characteristics separated UNC's offer.

"[I like] the coaching staff," Dennard said. "And they have a high graduation rate."

This past weekend's official visit pushed Dennard into contemplating an commitment.

"It went really good," Dennard said. "I learned about the academics and I just hung around with the fellas."

Dennard was hosted by sophomore cornerback Richie Rich, who is also from Georgia.

"It was fun [hanging out with him]," Dennard said. "He just showed me around and how it's a good place to be at."

Tommy Thigpen has served as Dennard's primary recruiter. However, Dennard spent most of the weekend with Chuck Pagano, UNC's defensive back coach.

"He said I have the ability to come in and play right now," Dennard said. "He said at cornerback I could work my way up."

Dennard closed out his stay with the customary Butch Davis meeting.

"[He talked about] committing and how they wanted me there," Dennard said. "I told him I'm going to get back to him later on tonight. I told him I really like the place and I would really like to play here."

Dennard is scheduled to officially visit UAB on February 1st and has been talking with Indiana about setting up an official trip. Dennard hasn't determined the status of either of those visits.
