'Real Good' Visit for Lucas

Sterling Lucas' late arrival didn't prevent him from having fun during his North Carolina official visit over the weekend.

"It went real good, I had a real good time," Lucas said.

The Orangeburg (S.C.) Orangeburg-Wilkinson high school basketball game Friday night prevented Lucas from arriving with other UNC official visitors. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker headed out after the game and eventually reached Chapel Hill at 2 a.m.

After some sleep, Lucas met up with Quan Sturdivant, his host for the weekend.

"He was telling me about a lot of the coaches," Lucas said. "He was telling me how it is around there. He was telling me that they have a need for linebacker and he would like for me to come to UNC."

Saturday afternoon, Sturdivant and Lucas made their way to the Smith Center for UNC's basketball game against Maryland.

"It was great," Lucas said. "The atmosphere, the fans were crazy. It was a good atmosphere. It was a great experience."

During his stay, Lucas had individual meetings with Tommy Thigpen, UNC's linebacker coach, and Chuck Pagano, UNC's defensive coordinator.

"I watched a little film with them," Lucas said. "They were going over the defensive packages. They were telling me that they really wanted me to be apart of [UNC] and that they are going to turn it around in a new direction."

Later, Lucas sat down with Butch Davis.

"He was saying basically the same thing the other coaches were telling me – how he wants me to be apart of his program and how he feels like I can really help them," Lucas said.

Still in the evaluation stages, Lucas isn't ready to name a leader.

"I'm just trying to do a little research on all the schools," Lucas said. "I don't really have a favorite right now. I'm just getting to know all the schools that I'm visiting right now."

This coming weekend, Lucas said he will "possibly" visit Maryland. Lucas, who has also officially visited NC State, is talking to South Carolina and Wake Forest about squeezing in trips to both schools the following week.

"I know I'm going to take at least one more [after Maryland], but I'm not sure if I'm going to take all of them," Lucas said. "I'm undecided how I'm going to take them. South Carolina and Wake Forest have talked about me taking a visit during the week."

Recently, South Carolina, a school many believe Lucas is leaning towards, offered a scholarship. Thus, the rumors began that Lucas was headed to USC.

"That's not true," Lucas said emphatically. "I like South Carolina also, but they're not my favorite. I'm not going to go there just because they've offered me."

Lucas said he isn't sure of his timetable for a decision.
