"The visit went good – it went real well. I got a chance to talk to a lot of players and get some info about the school and the coaching staff and the fact that they're on the up rise – they're up-and-coming."
Mackey, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound defensive end currently at Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy, had a one-on-one meeting with Blake during his visit.
"Coach Blake knows all about making that money," Mackey said. "He's trying to send his guys to the [National Football] League. He's an unbelievable guy. He does good by the players. He wants me to come in and make an impact as a defensive end."
A meeting with Davis closed out Mackey's visit.
"He's an awesome dude," Mackey said. "His reputation speaks for itself – he's a great coach. He's got great character and he's honest. That's the main thing I like about him. That's the main thing I liked about him – he's real honest."
Throughout his stay, fellow Virginian Ed Barham, a freshman tight end, hosted Mackey.
"He's a cool dude," Mackey said. "He's a great guy – good people. It was fun [hanging out with him]. He was just talking to me about a lot of things. He was real honest with me. He told me about the coaches. He told me how the campus was."
While Mackey didn't verbally commit like teammate Zach Brown, those thoughts weren't too far from his mind.
"North Carolina, I feel, is a school that I can see myself at," Mackey said. "I'm just taking my time and weighing my options."
Mackey has already taken official trips to Florida State and NC State, and will officially visit Virginia Tech this weekend.
On Signing Day, Mackey will announce his college destination.
"I'm going to take my time and just pray about it," Mackey said. "I'll talk to Coach ‘P' [Robert Prunty] about some things and my family. And then I'll make my decision on Signing Day."
The quality of, and relationship with, the coaching staff, and playing opportunity are the major factors that will go into his decision.
