UNC-WFU: John Bunting

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Excerpts from John Bunting's press conference following UNC's 31-0 loss at Wake Forest.

Opening Remarks:

There's not much to say about this, except that they are a very good offense. We knew that coming in, and we didn't do much to stop them. What was discouraging was that we didn't score points in the first half when we were moving the football. Lots of penalties, we turned the ball over--we should have points in the first half, but we don't have any.

Defensively, the disappointment to me, more than the run game is that we just couldn't knock any balls down. At one point I think he threw 10-12 balls in a row. It seem that way from the sideline. That's disappointing because you have to be able to compete with those guys and stop the pass. We didn't do it

It's very frustrating and very disappointing, particularly for our fans. A lot of them traveled here for the game. I feel bad for them. I feel bad for our staff that worked so hard to put together what I believe was a great plan. We just didn't get it done at all. We have four more games to play. We'll have to see if we can do something next week.

You played a lot of new people today--was that to shake things up?

We don't have a lot of players to play on the defensive line. We played Madison Hedgecock out of necessity at the defensive end position. I love that kid. What a tribute to him to have the courage to go over in three days and try to get lined up to play. It goes to show you where we are right now with that front and how much help we need in numbers and quality to improve. If anybody wants to play defensive line or linebacker at Carolina, it's a great time to come in and play.

What did you think about Jeff Longhany's first start?

He made his first start. I'm sure he got baptized in a lot of different ways, good and bad. He's a tough kid who loves to play, and I'm sure he'll learn a great deal from playing today.

What about C.J.'s play?

I think C.J. had a great first half. I'm just disappointed we couldn't do more with it. In the second half it was a different ball game. We just can't seem to get things going again. I really thought we'd score some points. I think we showed we can move the football, and then we couldn't capitalize. We didn't put it in the end zone. Penalties killed us, and that turnover really hurt us.

Are the penalties the kind of thing that surprises you?

Going into the game, I know and they know that we will not win football games if we shoot ourselves in the foot and have foolish penalties, and we had a number of them today.

It seems like you have personal foul penalties at the worst time. What are your thoughts?

I think it is very undisciplined and selfish. That's what I think. I don't coach that. That's not a good idea.

Where does the team go from here?

I don't know where this team goes from here. All I know is that I battle. I have battled all my life for everything I've ever gotten. Right now what we need is a win, so I'm going to try to battle back and get a win. That's all that's on my mind right now--getting ready to battle next week.

Are your guys battling?

I think our guys played extremely hard in the first half. I may not have showed on the scoreboard, but they played extremely hard. We just can't make mistakes like that and expect to win.
