Dennard, UNC Part Ways

Less than two weeks after verbally committing, Alphonzo Dennard and North Carolina have had to part ways, according to Mark Ledford, Rochelle (Ga.) Wilcox County's head football coach.

"Basically what has happened is Alphonzo is a kid that hasn't quite qualified yet," Ledford said. "He's close, but he hasn't yet. [UNC's academic] committee that makes decisions on their [recruits] to let them in or not met this week. As it stood, they were not going to allow Alphonzo into school there – even if he qualified, unless he waited until his ACT score got very high."

Dennard, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound athlete, verbally committed to UNC after officially visiting the school. He has also taken an official visit to Troy.

Upon hearing the news, Nebraska entered into the equation and extended Dennard a scholarship offer.

"Nebraska offered him earlier in the week and there's a chance he could be committing to them very soon," Ledford said.

This weekend, Dennard has scheduled official visits to both UAB and Nebraska. However, an important basketball game Saturday will most likely force him to miss both trips.

Ledford said Nebraska said they have no problem with Dennard signing with the Cornhuskers on Signing Day without visiting.
