UNC Commits Shine at Combine

APEX, N.C. --- After only one North Carolina commitment participated in the first two Shrine Bowl Combines combined, six UNC verbal commits were not only in attendance but also had exceptional performances at the final Shrine Bowl Combine held at Apex High School on Saturday.

Justin Dixon
LB, Smithfield (N.C.) Smithfield-Selma

Leading the way for the UNC verbal commitments, Dixon had the best Shrine Bowl Combine performance in recent memory. At 6-foot ½ and 228.3 pounds, he ran 40-yard dash times of 4.48 and 4.45 seconds on the Apex track.

Dixon then went on to do a Shrine Bowl Combine best 32 bench reps of 185 pounds. His 4.31-second 20-yard shuttle, which was conducted in Apex's gym, was second best among linebackers, while his 32-inch vertical was among the top five linebacker recordings.

"I feel like I came out here and showed up – let everybody know that I deserve to go to Carolina," Dixon said. "To me, I had nothing to lose. I just came out did what I had to do and got some good times."

Dixon admits that he came into Saturday's combine with a chip on his shoulder.

"My [recruiting] ranking was pretty low, so hopefully after today all that will change and my ranking will go up," Dixon said.

Despite claiming he's solid in his verbal commitment to UNC, Dixon attended rival NC State's Spring Game last weekend.

"[I went] just to check it out," Dixon said. "I know in my heart where I want to go. Just by going to other schools it's not going to change my mind. Deep down in my heart I know where I want to go and that's where I'm going to go. I can take as many visits as I want, but I just like Carolina and that's where I'm going to end up at."

Dixon says he doesn't have any plans to visit other schools, but won't rule out the possibility.

Donte Moss
DE, Jacksonville (N.C.) Northside

Although somewhat overshadowed by Dixon's showing, Moss' day was equally impressive. The UNC pledge clocked a 4.58-second 40-yard dash at 6-foot-4 and 230.5 pounds.

"It makes me feel good because I could have done better, because the Shrine Bowl [Combine] snuck up on me," Moss said. "I didn't really have a chance to work on my 40 like I wanted."

Both Moss' 20-yard shuttle time (4.35) and vertical jump (33.8 inches) were tops among nearly 80 defensive linemen in attendance.

Additionally, Moss completed 24 repetitions of 185 pounds.

Moss says his verbal commitment to UNC is firm and that he has no plans to visit any other school – including camps – outside of UNC.

Jared McAdoo
DT, Chapel Hill (N.C.)

For a 6-foot-2, 287.5-pounder, McAdoo's 4.96- and 5.00-second 40-yard dash times and 4.37-second 20-yard shuttle were remarkable.

"I got tight on the second [40-yard dash], but my first one I was really happy with it," McAdoo said. "I felt like it was a very good day overall."

McAdoo's 26 bench reps of 185 pounds was solid. He also vertically jumped 25.5 inches.

Firm in his pledge, McAdoo says he's been a regular on the UNC campus and observed several spring practices.

D.J. Bunn
DB, Smithfield (N.C.) Smithfield-Selma

Bunn, who measured in at 5-foot-11 and 186.6 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash and 20-yard shuttle in 4.49 and 4.54 seconds, respectfully. He also vertically jumped 29.3 inches and benched 185 pounds 19 times.

"I felt a little bit of pressure to perform well [because I'm a UNC pledge]," Bunn said. "You know, Carolina, that's a top level university. So I felt like I should have been on top of my game."

Although a solid showing in the combine events, it was Bunn's performance during position-oriented drills where he shined the brightest. He displayed great ball skills, footwork and range, earning an invitation to worked out after the combine with the Shrine Bowl coaching staff and 12 other defensive backs.

According to Bunn, UNC is bringing him in primarily as a cornerback. In addition to keeping in regular contact with primary recruiter Tommy Thigpen, Bunn said he also speaks to John Shoop and Everett Withers. David Collins
OT, Kernersville (N.C.) East Forsyth

Checking in a 6-foot-8 and 288 pounds, Collins has now knocked over 30 pounds off of his 2007 playing weight.

Leaving early for prom, Collins missed his chance to run the 40-yard dash. He did, however, post a 5.04-second 20-yard shuttle, 19-inch vertical, and 24 reps of 185 pounds.

"I did pretty decent," Collins said. "Of course I didn't really get the time I would like to train for [the combine]. I've been focusing on my team."

Collins displayed solid footwork and lateral mobility in the limited position-oriented drills. In addition to wishing the position drills were longer and more in-depth, Collins hoped to compete against some of his fellow UNC pledges.

"Not to be cocky, but I wished we would have done one-on-one [trench drills]," Collins said. "I'd have loved to have gone against Jared [McAdoo] and Donte [Moss] just to see where I'm at."

Collins says he speaks to Steve Hagen, his primary recruiter, and Sam Pittman, UNC's offensive line coach, every week.

Hunter Furr
RB, Winston-Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor

The sixth UNC verbal commitment, Hunter Furr, elected to be measured (6'0½") and weighed (200.8 lbs.), but left the Apex early without participating in any combine events.

Torrance Hunt
CB, Durham (N.C.) Jordan

Hunt furthered his speedy reputation by running the 40-yard dash in 4.23 seconds. With six stopwatches on him, he clocked a 4.22-second run – the fastest time ran at any of the Shrine Bowl Combines this year – on his second attempt.

"It was alright," Hunt said. "I've been a little tired – I've been working out the last couple of days. This was a last minute thing – Coach called me this morning wanting me to show up."

Before exiting early, Hunt registered a 39.7-inch vertical jump and impressed the Shrine Bowl coaches enough during position-oriented drills to be among the 12 invited to stay afterwards

Terry Shankle
CB, Norwood (N.C.) South Stanly

Like Hunt and Bunn, Shankle was among the defensive backs asked to stay after the combine to put in extra work with the Shrine Bowl coaching staff. In position-oriented drills, Shankle showed off his smooth footwork that allows him to effortlessly break on balls.

"I thought I did one of the best jobs," Shankle said. "I displayed my talent – I have good hips, good feet."

In combine events, Shankle posted a 4.44-second 40-yard dash, a 4.31-second 20-yard shuttle, a 33.3-inch vertical jump, and nine reps of 185 pounds. He checked in at 5-foot-10 ½ and 162.2 pounds.

Shankle, who is up to eight scholarship offers, says he doesn't have any favorites and doesn't expect to announce his college destination until February.

According to Shankle, UNC constantly sends him letters, but he hasn't received a recent phone call from the staff. He says UNC is now recruiting him as a cornerback with the possibility of playing wide receiver.

Damonte Terry
RB, Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland County

Terry was one of the more impressive looking participants and was among the standout running backs during position-oriented drills.

Terry also impressed when he stepped onto the Apex track. He clocked 40-yard dash times of 4.32 and 4.40 seconds.

Measuring in at 6-foot and 188.9 pounds, Terry also registered a 4.75-second 20-yard shuttle, 30.9-inch vertical jump, and 16 reps of 185 pounds.
