Report: Johnson, Holmes to sit out season opener

According to CBS Sportsline, the NCAA has suspended seniors Will Johnson and Jonathan Holmes for one game for participating in an on-campus 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament last spring.

NCAA rules prohibit players from participating in unsanctioned, organized games or leagues -- even ones as simple as a campus tournament. The one-game suspension is a light penalty, but still a penalty.

North Carolina will appeal the decision and expects to receive a ruling Friday, coach Matt Doherty said.

"They played in a pickup 3-on-3 tournament that raised money for cancer," Doherty said Monday evening. "We're appealing it and find out Friday."
