UNCW Press Conference
UNC Head Coach Mike Fox
"First off, I want to congratulate Mark and his staff. They are a great team and you can see that. They are a great club and it took all we had to win this regional here today. They won 44 games for a reason. It feels great to be returning to the Super Regional again. We got some big hits and pitches for the guys up here today. I thought Ryan Graepel was terrific all weekend at shortstop. He played exceptionally well and got a big swing of the bat there in the eighth inning, to add on that seventh run, which proved to be a big one. I congratulate Wilmington and I am very proud of my team and my staff, we are excited to play in the Super Regional next weekend."
On a potential match-up with Coastal Carolina:
"Well I know they beat us like a drum last time we played them. We know how good they are and they've been good for a number of years. They are a great club and it would be a terrific challenge for us if that is who we get. I am just glad we are playing at home. They present a number of problems offensively, with speed and power, you see all those runs they score. They are a scary club."
On Ryan Graepel's strong play over the weekend:
"We've got guys out there who haven't been in that situation before, but they're surrounded by juniors and seniors who have been there before. And you don't know what's going on in the dugout, or before the game in the apartment about how they're talking to these kids.
"You up your level of play – they don't want to let each other down. We've seen Ryan Graepel every day in practice and he is spectacular. He makes every play in practice, just like he did this weekend. So nothing surprises us, in terms of what he does defensively. He doesn't look the greatest sometimes, but the ball gets in the first baseman's glove and that's all [you need]. And he works hard at it."
Right Fielder Tim Fedroff
On what he was thinking when he walked to the plate down 1-0 in the fifth:
"Trying to just get that guy home. Trying to hit the ball on the ground and trying to get it through a hole somewhere. There was never a time when anybody was doubting the ability of anybody else."
Designated Hitter Mark Fleury
On going to a third straight Super Regional:
"I know we're all really excited and eager. We expected to be here, but it speaks volumes of not only our program now, but our coaches and how hard they work on the field and off the field recruiting, but to be a part of North Carolina baseball right now is something special."
Pitcher Brian Moran
On what he was feeling when he entered the game with the bases loaded:
"There were some nerves as it was the first postseason appearance that I had, but I fell behind early but made some good pitches and got the guy out."
On the difference in you from last season:
"I think it's a little bit of confidence, plus I added a slider as well as my fastball has a little bit more velocity. It's mainly confidence, though."
UNC Wilmington Head Coach Mark Scalf
"I want to congratulate North Carolina and we had a good run today. We got a great start from Larry, but just could not claw back tonight. Carolina has some great pitching, especially coming out of the bullpen. I thought we had a good showing and we enjoyed being back in the area. I thought if we could just get the bats going and put the pressure on them defensively we could push it to tomorrow."
On the turning point of the game:
"You know we felt like when they added the runs after the home run the game turned. I really felt like if we could just continue to string some at-bats together we were aggressive and could fine some holes we would have a chance. We did hit some balls hard tonight. I thought one of the things that hurt us, was in the first inning we had runners on first and second with nobody out and we don't get anything out of that. We had a bunt and they got the lead runner, then groundball, fly ball and we are out of the inning. I felt like we couldn't get our two-out hit when we needed early in the ball game, where we had a chance to add on before they did."
Third baseman Nate Hall
On not being able to score runs early:
"I mean it is very frustrating, but it's baseball. I felt like we put some good swings on the bat and hit some balls hard, but we were not able to strike early."
Right fielder Bobby Leeper
On the teams performance this weekend:
"I feel like we performed pretty good, we just weren't able to strike early this game. It was an emotional win early today, but we fell short of our goal."
