Six Heels, Eight Signees Drafted

Four Tar Heel signees were drafted Thursday on Day 1 of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. The draft continued on Friday, where six current Tar Heels and four more signee were selected.


No. 231 (7th) - Tim Fedroff - Cleveland

No. 232 (7th) - Tim Federowicz - Boston

No. 398 (13th) - Rob Wooten - Milwaukee

No. 647 (21st) - Tyler Trice - Colorado

No. 1101 (36th) - Adam Warren - Cleveland

No. 1214 (40th) - Seth Williams - New York M


No. 71 (2nd) - Jason Knapp - Philadelphia

  • "I think it's a tough decision, but Jason is blessed with two great options," said Jeff Knapp, Jason's father. "North Carolina is a great university with a great baseball program. And the Phillies are a great organization. ... I'd expect we'll know what Jason's future is in the next few weeks." (Express-Times)

No. 77 (2nd) - Derrik Gibson - Boston

  • "I definitely have to weigh the whole college thing," Gibson said. ... It does make it a lot harder [to decide], being drafted by the Boston Red Sox, but when we come to that fork in the road, we'll do what we've done all year and sit down and weigh out all of the options." (News Journal)

No. 81 (3rd) - LJ Hoes - Baltimore

  • Hoes, whose initials stand for "Little Jerome" in comparison to his 250-pound father, said that he was embraced and tackled to the floor by his father when they saw that he had been selected in the third round, 81st overall, by the Orioles. "It was a really good feeling," Hoes said. "I'm very happy just to see one of my dreams come true." (Washington Post)

  • "We'll see what they put on the table and we'll negotiate with it," Melville said. "If it feels like a good amount, we'll take it. If not, I'm excited to go to UNC." (Post-Dispatch)

No. 830 (27th) - Garrison Lassiter - New York Y
