Davis Preparing for Chapel Hill

Ed Davis, of Richmond (Va.) Benedictine, will head to Chapel Hill on Sunday, embarking on the next chapter of his life and basketball career.

The 6-foot-9, 215-pound power forward already has set lofty expectations for himself and he's been spending the past few months in the gym prepping for his arrival.

"I'm just trying to stay in shape," Davis said. "I've been playing a lot around the area trying to stay in shape. "

Davis said he does the majority of his workouts with his father, Terry Davis, who spent 12 seasons in the NBA. To go with the workout plan he does with the elder Davis, he's also picked up some tips from the Carolina coaching staff.

"Their assistant coach gave me a push up and sit up plan," Davis said. "I've been doing that, but haven't been doing too much. I think I am [getting in good shape]."

As far as summer plans goes, Davis said he knows he'll be in school is planning on spending a ton of time in the practice gym.

"Coach said we will be playing every day and going to class," he said. "He hasn't said a whole lot about it."

As for what jersey number he'll wear at UNC, Davis said he's hoping for No. 32, but that hasn't yet been decided.

Davis, who will room with fellow freshman Justin Watts, said he keeps in close contact with the three other incoming freshmen.

"I probably talk to Larry three or four times a week," he said. "I probably talk to Zeller once a week. I just started talking to Justin. They are all real cool."

Davis finished his high school career ranked by Scout.com at No. 10 overall in the class of 2008. He averaged 22 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks during his senior campaign.
