* Ed Cota came up with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, both season highs, to lead Zalgiris Kaunas (9-1) to an 89-63 Lithuanian League victory over the weekend.

Cota is averaging 29 minutes, 12 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

* Jason Capel got his pro career started on Friday night with the Fayetteville Patriots of the NBDL. Capel started at shooting guard, played 24 minutes, pumped in 13 points going 4-6 from the field (2-2 on 3-pt. FG's), grabbed 3 boards and handed out 3 assists. Fayetteville won the season opening game 91-87 over Asheville.

Saturday, when the Patriots travelled to Roanoke, Jason Capel had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in an 80-73 overtime defeat.

* Dante Calabria has been added to the roster of Benetton Treviso (Italy - A1) for the rest of the season. Calabria will come off the bench to back-up guards Trajan Langdon and Tyus Edney, and might play some at small forward.

In his first game on Saturday, Calabria went 3-6 from the field (2-4 3-pt. FG's) for 8 points, with 4 rebounds and 2 assists during 15 minutes.

* Larry Brown is "a lock" to coach the team put together by USA Basketball that will attempt to qualify for the 2004 Olympics, according to Peter Vecsey in Sunday's New York Post.

Vecsey quoted an unnamed member of the USA Basketball Selection Committee to say, "Yes, Larry is the frontrunner. As great a coach as Phil [Jackson] is, he's not really being considered."

* Some early season NBA stats to consider:

--- Jerry Stackhouse (Wizards) has now made 91-of-101 free throw attempts. The 90.1 FT% is 4th-best among those with at least 40 chances.

--- Antawn Jamison (Warriors) at 25.8 ppg ranks 5th in scoring average. Stackhouse is 8th with 23.9 ppg.

--- Rasheed Wallace (Trail Blazers) has hit 16-of-33 from beyond the arc. His 48.5% accuracy puts him 7th in 3-pt. FG%.

--- Michael Jordan (Wizards) can still zip into the opponent's passing lanes. His 18 steals in 11 games (1.6 pg) places him 25th among the NBA's steals leaders.
