With the start of college basketball's 2002-03 season upon us here's an update on the Tar Heels in the college coaching ranks ...

MATT DOHERTY ('84) - North Carolina (Atlantic Coast Conference), 3rd Year: A UNC player from 1980-84 ... Averaged 9.3 pts. as sophomore member of '82 national champs ... In first year as head coach, at Notre Dame, won 22 games ... Was an assistant at Davidson for 3 years and with Kansas for 7 years ... Picked for a 7th-place finish by the ACC media preseason poll.

Season opener: 11/18 Preseason NIT vs. Penn State (Big Ten Conference)

BUTCH ESTES ('71) - Guilford College (Old Dominion Athletic Conference - Division III), 4th Year: Played freshman basketball at UNC and was a JV team student-assistant for Bill Guthridge for 3 years ... Rated 6th in the conference in preseason poll of ODAC coaches.

Season opener: 11/22 @ East Tennessee State (Southern Conference)

CURTIS HUNTER ('87) - North Carolina A&T (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), 4th Year: Was a High School All-America selection in 1982 ... Played for North Carolina from 1982-87 ... Played pro ball in Australia & England from 1987-92.

Season opener: 11/23 @ Georgia State (Atlantic Sun Conference)

JEFF LEBO ('89) - Tennessee-Chattanooga (Southern Conference), 1st Year: Was head coach at Tennessee Tech the last four years ... Served as an assistant at East Tennessee State, Vanderbilt and South Carolina ... Selected as a team captain and an Academic All-American as a UNC player ... His dad, Dave Lebo, is an assistant coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga.

BUZZ PETERSON ('85) - Tennessee (Southeastern Conference), 2nd Year: 'Robert' was a member of the Heels '82 championship team ... In 1981 was named the North Carolina High School Player of the Year and Athlete of the Year ... Has a career record of 105-50 after 5 seasons .... SEC media preseason voting ranks "BUZZBALL" 5th in the SEC - East.

Season opener: 11/22 vs. Gardner-Webb (South Atlantic Conference)

TONY SHAVER ('76) - Hampden-Sydney College (Old Dominion Athletic Conference - Division III), 17th Year: Played guard for UNC from 1972-75 ... Helped coach the Tar Heel JV squad as a senior ... Has a career record of 330-117 (73.8%) in 16 seasons at Hampden-Sydney ... Won the ODAC championship last year for the 8th time and went to the NCAA Division III tourney for the 6th year in a row ... Ranked #7 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll and #2 by the preseason ODAC coaches' poll.

Season opener: NW Mutual Tip-Off Classic vs. Wesley College (Pennsylvania Athletic Conference - Division III)

ROY WILLIAMS ('72) - Kansas (Big 12 Conference), 15th Year: Was a UNC assistant under Dean Smith from 1978-88 ... Has an impressive mark of 384-92 (80.7%) as head coach of the Jayhawks after 14 seasons ... Roy's Jayhawks went 29-3, 16-0 (Big 12) to get to the Final Four last year ... Chosen to win the Big 12 in preseason polls by the Big 12 media and coaches ... Ranked 2nd by the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll to start the season.

Season opener: 11/19 Preseason NIT vs. Holy Cross (Patriot League)

ED WILLS ('94) - Ferrum College (Dixie Conference - Division III), 3rd Year: Began as Ferrum's head coach in September 2000 after four years as an assistant ... Served as a varsity manager for UNC's 1993 National Champs.

Season opener: 11/23 Roanoke College Tip-off Tournament vs. Goucher College (Capital Athletic Conference - Division III)

Current Assistant Coaches

SCOTT CHERRY ('93) is an assistant at Tennessee Tech, having previously been at George Mason.

RICK DUCKETT ('79) is in his 2nd year at South Carolina (Southeastern Conference).

BRAD FREDERICK ('99) is in his 3rd year at Vanderbilt (Southeastern Conference).

PAT SULLIVAN ('95) is in his 2nd year at UNC-Wilmington [Women] (Colonial Athletic Association).

Coaching Changes From Last Season

RANDY WEIL ('79) resigned at the end of last season after 6 years as head coach at Middle Tennessee State.

MICHAEL BROOKER ('01) is a coaching staff volunteer at Tennessee-Chattanooga under Jeff Lebo.

MIKE ELLIS ('88) is now the Director of Recruiting and Special Projects at Virginia Commonwealth after 14 years as an assistant coach.

STEPHEN GILES ('90), after two years as an assistant at Florida State, was not retained after the coaching change from Steve Robinson to Leonard Hamilton.
