Of the eight players projected as defensive ends heading into the 2008 season,
all but E.J. Wilson have at least three years of eligibility remaining. Wilson has two years.
However, the entire unit is very green. Half of the projected ends have no game experience at the position.
Additionally, because of their atypical combination of size and athleticism, you can't have enough elite defensive line prospects.
Thus, even though UNC has received a pledge from Donte Moss, the staff hopes to land at least one more defensive end prospect. With Moss in the fold, Sam Montgomery and Devon Kennard are the top names on their board.
Moss stunned the state when he verbally committed to UNC in March. An assumed NC State fan, he began to start to lean UNC's way after attending the Tar Heels' Junior Day.
Moss selected UNC over offers from such programs as Alabama, Clemson, Florida, East Carolina, Georgia, NC State, and Virginia Tech.
The highest rated pledge to date, Moss is a five-star prospect and is ranked the No. 3 defensive end in the nation by Scout.com.
Moss is an uncanny mixture of size and speed. He has the potential to be a dominating force as a pass rusher and against the run. He fires off the snap and avoids blockers. He chases down the ball carrier aggressively in pursuit.
At Northside, Moss plays both tailback and defensive end. As a junior, he rushed for 14 touchdowns.
Targets With Offers
6'3" 249 lbs. 4.90 Flowery Branch (Ga.) High School
UNC extended Cross an offer during the Evaluation Period. He says he is considering all 15 schools that have offered him. Outside of Georgia Tech, he hasn't visited any schools. However, he plans to spend the falls months unofficially visiting several schools for games before narrowing down his list. UNC is under consideration for a visit.
6'4" 227 lbs. 4.72 Roswell (Ga.) Centennial High School
Cummings is another defensive end that collected a UNC offer during the Evaluation Period. His co-leaders are Georgia and South Carolina. He also mentioned a strong interest in Auburn, Indiana, and Maryland. All of the aforementioned schools have offered except Auburn and Georgia. He has visited both of his co-leaders and plans to visit UNC at some point.
6'4" 230 lbs. 4.75 Seffner (Fla.) Armwood High School
Giddins has collected approximately 30 offers and claims to be still considering all of them. He will reportedly take unofficial visits to Auburn, LSU, and UNC, and is also considering trips to Florida and Florida State. He has already visited UCF and USF. At one point, FSU was his leader, but verbal commitments of defensive ends and lack of communication made him cool off on the Seminoles.
6'3" 257 lbs. 4.85 Phoenix (Ariz.) Desert Vista High School
Kennard is the top defensive end in the country and unsurprisingly has his choice of schools to choose from. Recently, he narrowed his focus to five schools: Arizona State, California, USC, Texas, and UCLA. He also said that he would continue to keep an eye on Florida, Miami, UNC, Oregon, and Washington.
6'5" 240 lbs. 4.60 Greenwood (S.C.) High School
After visiting UNC several weeks ago, Montgomery was blown away and UNC went from an afterthought to a possible destination. He holds over 40 offers and doesn't plan on making a decision until Signing Day. He plans to narrow things down by the end of the summer with Clemson, LSU, Miami, Michigan, UNC, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, and USC in good shape to make the cut.

Like end, tackle is free of seniors, but UNC will lose half of its depth here
following the 2009 season. To ease the blow, UNC's goal is to sign one or two elite
UNC has already landed a verbal commitment from Jared McAdoo and is making a strong push for Isaac Holmes.
McAdoo's strong bond with John Blake was the foundation for his March UNC verbal commitment. At the time, McAdoo had also collected offers from East Carolina, Maryland, NC State, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wake Forest.
A Scout.com three-star prospect, McAdoo is the 31st ranked defensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com.
McAdoo is a quick penetrating tackle that possesses elite footwork. He explodes off the snap to shoot into the gap with a quick initial step. Blockers who do catch him off the snap are immediately pushed into the pocket.
As a junior, McAdoo recorded 59 tackles including 20 for a loss and 13 sacks for Chapel Hill High School.

John Blake is recruiting Holmes, showing where he sits on UNC's priority list. While he is considering a trip to UNC, the Tar Heels' chances could be slowly fading away. He currently favors Maryland, and also lists Florida, Miami, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers as his favorite schools.
