Townsend, Reddick Absent on Day 1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- North Carolina heralded recruits Joseph Townsend and Kevin Reddick won't be with the team this afternoon when the Tar Heels take the field for the first official practice of the season.

"Kevin Reddick didn't report and Townsend didn't report," Butch Davis said at Friday's press conference.

Townsend, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive end at Los Altos Hills (Calif.) Foothill Junior College, is currently at home in California working on becoming qualified. He needs to complete some additional academic work before enrolling at UNC.

"I am trying to petition a class that Foothill sprung on me at the last second," Townsend told Inside Carolina on Friday morning. "The counselors here have given me the run around. So I am trying to handle that situation so I can hurry up and get down there."

A source close to the situation told Inside Carolina that Reddick's absence is because the NCAA Clearinghouse disputed his qualifying test scores. Reddick is a 6-3, 230-pound four-star linebacker from New Bern (N.C.) High School.

"These things, they just pop up out of nowhere," Davis said. "Kevin came to summer school and did extremely well. Hopefully it'll resolve itself in the very near future."
