Newsome, Blue Lead Rout

DANVILLE, Va. --- Hargrave Military Academy's backfield duo of Kevin Newsome and A.J. Blue accounted for five touchdowns on Sunday, helping the Cadets trounce Averett University's junior varsity squad, 45-3.

"Honestly, we practice so much that it just felt like practice," Newsome said. "… [Averett] threw some different things [at us]. I had to run out of the pocket a couple of times."

Newsome, a 6-foot-3, 215-pounder who started and saw most of the snaps at quarterback, completed 5-of-9 passes for 201 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also rushed five times for 30 yards and a score.

"I think I did pretty well – I've got a lot to work on," Newsome said. "[I need to work on] everything. I'm just going to be a student of the game. I'll review this film and just try to get better."

Blue, a 6-foot-2, 205-pounder who has verbally committed to UNC, spelled Newsome at quarterback in the third quarter, but never threw a pass.

"I wish I could have gotten in a little bit more – more running back and more quarterback," Blue said. "But it's all good; anything to help the team."

Blue, who rushed for 28 yards on nine carries, also served as the backup running back and goal line specialist. He scored on touchdown carries of one and two yards.

"The other running back, Onterio McCalebb, he's the ‘fast back' and I'm the ‘big back,'" Blue said. "Just here I'm considered the ‘big back.'"

There was a scary moment late in the fourth quarter for Blue when he had to leave the field after being tackled awkwardly.

"He came off the end, I tried to stiff-arm him, and he pulled me down," Blue said. "My leg was planted, but I got up and stretched it out. It's alright. No worries."

A couple of snaps later, Blue returned to the field.

Another UNC pledge, Kevin Reddick, led a defense that kept Averett out of the end zone.

"I guess you can say the defense did their thing," Reddick said. "… I'm just trying to make plays here and there."

Reddick, a 6-foot-3, 230-pounder, started at middle linebacker where he was asked to blitz on nearly every play.

"It depends on who we play -- this week, they wanted me to blitz a lot, last week the outside guys blitzed a lot against Navy," Reddick said.

Reddick ended the game with five tackles (three solo), a fumble recovery, a pass breakup, and a couple of QB hurries.

Hargrave's football team will have the next two weekends off, and then will travel to Robert Morris University on September 22 to take on the junior varsity team.

UNC coaches John Blake, Kenny Browning, and John Lovett visited Hargrave Military Academy late last week to check on the status of Blue and Reddick, and watch a practice.

The weekend of September 20 marks the first weekend Hargrave students can leave campus. Blue plans to spend his first free weekend back at home, while Reddick said he is looking to attend UNC's bout with ACC rival Virginia Tech. Blue said he does, however, plan to attend several UNC's games this fall.
