Atkinson wins ACC ROW; Women's game moved to Dome

Tar Heels host Appalachian State for 7 p.m. tipoff while NCAA volleyball goes on at Carmichael.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina freshman La' Tangela Atkinson has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week following her performance in last weekend's Rainbow Wahine Classic. She averaged 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds as North Carolina claimed third place in the eight-team tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In an 82-66 win over DePaul on Friday, Atkinson totaled 12 points and a team-best ten rebounds for her second double-double in three career games. In a 66-63 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday, she came close to another with nine points and nine rebounds. In the final game of the tournament, a 61-50 win over host Hawaii on Sunday, Atkinson made the first start of her career and led all scorers with 19 points.

Five games into the season, the 6-1 guard/forward leads UNC in scoring (14.0 points per game) and rebounding (7.8 per game).


CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina women's basketball game scheduled for Thurday evening against Appalachian State has been moved to the Dean E. Smith Center due to NCAA volleyball action in Carmichael Auditorium. The 16th-ranked Tar Heels (4-1) will tip off against the Mountaineers at 7 p.m.

The Tar Heels arrived back in Chapel Hill Tuesday evening following an eight-day trip to Hawaii, where they took third in the Rainbow Wahine Classic. Carolina opened play with an 82-66 win over DePaul on Friday and lost to then-No. 22 Oklahoma 66-63 on Saturday. UNC finished with a 61-50 win over host Hawaii on Sunday in the third-place game. Senior guard Coretta Brown and junior center Candace Sutton earned all-tournament honors.

Carolina has no other women's basketball games scheduled for the Smith Center this season. The Tar Heels are 11-8 all-time at the facility and last played there during the 2001-02 season, when they lost 66-63 to NC State on Jan. 10, 2002. Appalachian State is 1-3 on the season following an 88-59 loss Sunday at Wake Forest.

Women's basketball tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors. Admission is free for children 12 and under, and for North Carolina students, faculty and staff with UNC One Cards.

NCAA volleyball action at Carmichael begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, when South Carolina and American face off. The 13th-ranked Tar Heel volleyball team will host Winthrop at approximately 7 p.m. and the winners will meet in a second-round game Friday at 7 p.m. at Carmichael.

For the NCAA Volleyball Tournament, adult all-session passes are $10, students and seniors are $6 and children are $4. Tickets at the door are $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $3 for children. One ticket gains admission to both matches on Thursday. The doors to Carmichael Auditorium will open at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
