Best's Recruitment Picking Up

Byron Best has seen his recruiting stock rise with a solid senior season.

"Recruiting has been going well," Best said. "Some schools stepped in and I'm being recruited hard."

Best, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound cornerback with a combine-timed 4.37-second 40-yard dash, is starting at cornerback, returning kickoffs, and seeing increased reps at receiver for Greenwood (S.C.).

"I've seen time on offense here and there, but from [Friday] night and onto next week I'm going to have to be on both sides of the ball just about the whole game," Best said.

On the year, Best has scored six total touchdowns. He has three interceptions, and three catches for 147 yards. Two of his catches and both of his receiving touchdowns came this past Friday in a 34-14 defeat of Piedmont (S.C.) Wren.

Boise State and West Virginia have not only begun to recruit Best, but have verbally offered. Both are awaiting senior film to officially offer.

Best is also currently hearing from Marshall, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Heading into his senior football season, Best's lone scholarship offer came from UNC.

"I'm still in contact with [UNC]," Best said. "I talk to Coach [John] Lovett, and Coach [John] Blake, as well. Mostly, they've been sending me mail that I need to find a time to do an official visit."

Best, though, figures to wait until after the conclusion of his football season to take his official visits.

Though he hasn't set a firm list of schools he plans to officially visit, Best says UNC is a school that'll more than likely be on that list.

Before taking any official visits, Best is reluctant to name a favorite school.

"I can't say [where I'm leaning towards], but I'm really liking a few schools a lot," Best said. "It's hard to choose from right now. But I would really love if [South] Carolina just stepped in, because they had my favorite player [Captain Munnerlyn] and if I were to consider that school I would love to wear his number."

Best and his teammate, Sam Montgomery, are going through the recruiting process together. Both have UNC offers and are being pursued by South Carolina.

"Me and him both sat down and talked about [going to the same school] a few times," Best said. "But he told me no matter where I go he'd be happy; and the same with him. It's possible that [us going to the same school] could happen."

Like many that follow recruiting, Best isn't sure what school Montgomery is leaning towards.

"For Sam, it's hard when you have tons of offers on the table," Best said. "But North Carolina, I know, and South Carolina, I know, are on his mind. Some other schools too [are on his mind], but I know those two schools are on top for his decision."
