Cam Thomas wants Butch Davis to know he's available if North Carolina needs a new weapon in its offensive backfield. UNC's 6-foot-3, 330-pound defensive tackle used to play a little fullback at North Moore High School in Cameron, and as a senior there rumbled for nearly 800 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. "I've still got it in me if he ever needs me back there. I've still got that breakaway speed,'' Thomas said with a chuckle Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Tyler Zeller of North Carolina broke his left wrist in Tuesday night's win over Kentucky and likely is lost for the rest of the season. Zeller underwent surgery yesterday at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. A normal recovery time for such an injury is 12 to 16 weeks, according to doctors in the school's sports-medicine program, which makes his return this season unlikely. Coach Roy Williams said his team will have to adjust to Zeller's absence and overcome its third major injury of the season, starting on Friday in a game at Cal-Santa Barbara, North Carolina's first road game of the season.

Just as one Tyler appears to be getting closer to returning for top-ranked North Carolina, another is likely out for the rest of the season.
Freshman Tyler Zeller -- who has started the past two games for injured All-America Tyler Hansbrough -- broke his left wrist during the final minutes of UNC's 77-58 blowout of Kentucky. He had surgery Wednesday afternoon and did not travel with the Tar Heels when they left for Friday's game at UC Santa Barbara. The normal recovery for injuries such as his is usually 12 to 16 weeks, the school announced.
