Montgomery Gets Visit from Blake

North Carolina assistant coach John Blake was among the numerous recruiters that stopped by Greenwood (S.C.) High to visit Sam Montgomery last week.

"He came by on Monday," Montgomery said. "He didn't talk about much really; just the recruiting game, getting to know me better, and getting to know my momma."

Montgomery, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound defensive end, says scheduling an official visit was not a topic of discussion.

In addition to Blake, Montgomery has fielded visits from Earl Lane (LSU), Brad Lawning (South Carolina), and David Reeves (Tennessee).

Recently, Montgomery narrowed his list of 40-plus scholarship offers down to Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, UNC, Oregon, South Carolina, Southern Cal, and Tennessee. "[With those schools] a lot of it had to do with the recruiter and who's going to be there to coach me," Montgomery said. "And I have a good chance to come in and play."

By January, Montgomery plans to have his list of contending schools narrowed down to five. Those final five will each receive an official visit from him.

"I'm getting there, but I still do have to do some work – some homework," Montgomery said.

Montgomery says LSU and Tennessee are the only locks to make the cut to five.

"Earl Lane is a great guy, he's a really nice dude, and I can really see myself playing under him," Montgomery said. "He's a really great man.

"[With Tennessee], they got a new coordinator probably coming in... There will be a fair opportunity to get early playing time, because he doesn't know anybody."

Between now and when his final five are announced, Montgomery will be evaluating the remaining schools on his contenders list.

"I'll be doing a lot of reading of the schools and seeing what kind of facilities they have," Montgomery said. "[I'll be doing] a lot of going and seeing."

During the season, Montgomery was able to unofficially visit Clemson, UNC, and South Carolina. He visited UNC for the Notre Dame game.

"It let me see what kind of atmosphere I would be playing in," Montgomery said. "It was pretty good."

Over the course of the next month, Montgomery is considering unofficial trips to Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Miami, UNC, and Tennessee.

"UNC is there, but I just have to see and talk to them some more," Montgomery said. "I have unanswered questions, but there's something at UNC that I just haven't found yet. But I love Coach Blake to death, though."

Montgomery says that he and Blake are "real close" and the two communicate weekly.

Montgomery plans to announce his collegiate decision on Signing Day.
