In the end, location was the determining factor.
"Yeah, I'm going to go to Arizona State," Burks said. "The distance was the thing and I didn't want to go far away from school. It's just a matter of location.
Burks spoke to the North Carolina coaching staff about his decision.
"They called me. It was really tough because me and John Bunting had a close relationship. He said he kind of understood."
UNC fans can still see Burks play linebacker next year and won't have to leave Chapel Hill to do so.
"We play North Carolina in the third game of the season I think. That will be strange but it will make me want to play even harder."
Now North Carolina turns its focus at the linebacker position elsewhere. High on that list is Marcus Miller, Burks' teammate at Cerritos. However, Burks was unable to give any indication of what Miller might do.
"I'm not sure what he is thinking. He just went to Kansas State last week. I'm really not sure what he will do."
