"Everywhere they went we had to eat with them," said future Tar Heel wide receiver Mike Mason," and they were showing a lot of disrespect for North Carolina. They were always talking junk to us about how they'd won 18 of the last 24 or something like that."
Said UNC commitment Marcus Hands, "The South Carolina team was talking junk to us wherever we went [this week]. It felt good to show them what we got."
And what they've got is a set of four defensive lineman sure to wreak havoc in the ACC in coming years.
The N.C. line of Hands, Terry Hunter, Mario Williams and DeMarcus Tyler controlled the game from the outset, and SC was unable to manufacture any offense on the ground (26 carries for -35 yards) or in the air throughout.
"I'm not surprised by the way we were able to stop them - we had a great defensive line," sai Hunter, who will join Hands in Chapel Hill this fall.
NC Offensive MVP Chris Leak connected on two second-half TD passes to put the game out of reach, the first of which was 23 yards to Kenny Moore in the third and the second a 24-yarder to Travis Lee at 7:25.
In the first half, Jed Bines ran in a 3-yard TD at 3:40 in the first quarter and Drew Williamson hit Travis Lee from 8 yards out at 2:03 in the second as North Carolina built a 14-0 halftime lead. Pierre Parker, named the NC Defensive MVP, had an interception for NC.
UNC commitment Mike Mason justified his ranking as the best wide receiver on the field, hauling in seven catches for 64 yards.
