2010 Recruiting Preview: TE, OL

While the Tar Heel coaches wrap up the 2009 signing class, their recruitment of high school juniors is already well underway. After consulting with inside sources, Inside Carolina provides an exclusive position-by-position preview of the 2010 recruiting board ...

When reviewing this series throughout the week, keep in mind that this is preliminary analysis. Of course, many new recruits will pop up on UNC's recruiting radar and receive offers in the coming months.

Also, the depth chart is fluid. For simplicity, an assumption was made that all of the players who are verbally committed to UNC for 2009 will sign and enroll at UNC. Per the NCAA limit, only 25 freshmen can be brought in per year.

Tight End

2007 Scholarship Roster
Tight End
# Name Ht Wt Cl/El Rk
17Zack Pianalto 6-4250 Jr/Jr21
80Ed Barham 6-3 265Sr/Jr73
83Trevor Stuart 6-3250 Sr/JrNR
*Prizell Brown 6-4 255Jr/JrNR
Hybrid Back
# Name Ht Wt Cl/El Rk
49Ryan Taylor 6-3240 Sr/Sr46
33Christian Wilson 6-3 235So/So7
86Randy White 6-5240 So/FrNR

UNC will have its starting tight end and H-back for the next couple seasons. However, the depth behind the two starters is less than ideal and thins further following the 2009 season with Ryan Taylor's graduation. The UNC coaching staff will aim to sign one or two tight end prospects.

Targets With Offers
Blake Barker
6'6" 230 lbs. 4.90 Cambridge (Mass.) Buckingham Browne & Nichols School
Barker plays both tight end and defensive end in high school, but all of his offers -- Boston College, Duke, Maryland, UNC, and Stanford -- are for tight end. Last fall, he attended the UNC-Duke game held in Durham. He has also attended several games at Boston College. As a junior, he caught 18 passes for 405 yards and five touchdowns. He also made 45 tackles including 14.5 sacks.
Harrison Jones
6'4" 216 lbs. 4.80 Cordova (Tenn.) Evangelical Christian School
Jones, who is the brother of current Alabama lineman and former UNC recruit Barrett Jones, holds offers from UNC and Stanford. He camped at UNC last summer and attended the UNC-Notre Dame game. Plays both wide receiver and tight end in high school.
Blake Lueders
6'5" 245 lbs. 4.80 Zionsville (Ind.) High School
Lueders has received offers from Boston College, Indiana, Iowa, UNC, Northwestern, Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest. Most schools are recruiting him for the defensive side of the ball (linebacker or end). He played middle linebacker this past fall accruing 128 tackles, 3 sacks, and an interception. He's started on varsity since his freshman season playing fullback his first two years of his prep career. He plans to visit UNC during spring practice.
Zack McCray
6'4" 221 lbs. 4.75 Lynchburg (Va.) Brookville High School
McCray has collected offers from Boston College, Connecticut, Duke, Maryland, UNC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and West Virginia. He is cousins with VT pledge Logan Thomas. UNC has been mentioned among his favorites -- which also includes Maryland, VT, Wake Forest -- but he's believed to be a VT lean. He spent much of last summer and fall unofficially visiting schools in the region, including a couple of trips to UNC. He plans to return to UNC this spring.

Tackle

2009 Scholarship Roster
Left Tackle
# Name Ht Wt Cl/El Rk
72Kyle Jolly 6-6 300Gr/SrNR
71Carl Gaskins 6-5295 Jr/So NR
*Travis Bond 6-7323Fr/Fr 29
*Brennan Williams 6-6273 Fr/Fr 9
Right Tackle
# Name Ht Wt Cl/El Rk
66Mike Ingersoll 6-4 295Sr/JrNR
67Morgan Randall 6-6285 Sr/Jr NR
*David Collins 6-8288Fr/Fr 62

While the 2009 haul will ease UNC's pain at offensive tackle (if Morgan Randall takes a medical hardship, as expected, UNC will enter spring practice with three scholarship tackles) – this position will always be approached like the quarterback position: UNC will aim to add elite depth to the position with each recruiting class.

Plus, UNC will lose Kyle Jolly, who will be a three-year starter, to graduation following the 2009 season. Thus, UNC will head into the 2010 season with unproven talent and/or limited experience on the depth chart at both spots.

In addition to the following recruits, UNC has also offered Notre Dame verbal commitment Christian Lombard of Palatine (Ill.) Fremd.

Targets With Offers
Rob Crisp

6'7" 302 lbs. 5.00 Chapel Hill (N.C.) High School
Crisp's scholarship offers list has already reached an uncountable amount; it includes the likes of Clemson, Miami, Michigan, UNC, NC State, and Tennessee. He has already been selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Crisp, who plays both offensive tackle and defensive end in high school, played the last couple of seasons alongside UNC pledge Jared McAdoo. His guardians are NC State season ticket holders.
Seantrel Henderson

6'8" 300 lbs. 5.10 St. Paul (Minn.) Cretin-Derham Hall High School
Henderson has already collected dozens of offers, including Boston College, Florida, Minnesota, UNC, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA, and Wisconsin. He continues a long tradition of Cretin-Derham Hall linemen to enter the Division I-A ranks. He was named All-State by the Associated Press following his junior season. He is also a standout in basketball and track (shotput and discus).
James Hurst
6'5" 271 lbs. 5.18 Plainfield (Ind.) High School
Hurst has collected offers from Duke, Indiana, Michigan State, Mississippi State, UNC, Notre Dame, Purdue, and Stanford. He was named all-conference and all-county after starting at left tackle as a junior. His older brother, Nelson, is a tight end at Mississippi State. He has already been a frequent visitor to Notre Dame's campus.
T.J. Leifheit
6'7" 300 lbs. 5.40 Wilmington (N.C.) Hoggard High School
In December, Leifheit landed scholarship offers from UNC and NC State. He has attended two games at UNC -- vs. Georgia Tech and NC State. He won a state championship playing with current Tar Heels Jonathan Cooper and Casey Barth. He plans to graduate early.
Eric Mack
6'4" 318 lbs. 5.10 St. Matthews (S.C.) Calhoun Co. High School
Mack has been offered a scholarship by Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, UNC, NC State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest. He lists Alabama, Clemson, Kentucky, UNC, and South Carolina as his early favorites. Has not yet visited UNC but said he plans to do so.
Mark Shuman

6'6" 270 lbs. 4.90 Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy

Shuman's scholarship list has reached double digits and includes UNC, Notre Dame, Purdue, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. His father coaches at Fork Union Military Academy and his brother plays for Virginia Tech. He claims Virginia Tech as his leader.

Interior Line

2009 Scholarship Roster
Left Guard
# Name Ht Wt Cl/El Rk
70Alan Pelc 6-6325 Sr/JrNR
64Jonathan Cooper 6-3 295So/Fr42
*Johnnie Farms 6-2306 Fr/Fr11

69Lowell Dyer 6-4290 Gr/SrNR
73Aaron Stahl 6-2290 Gr/SrNR
65Cameron Holland 6-2 275Jr/So78
Right Guard
# Name Ht Wt Cl/El Rk
77Kevin Bryant 6-7350 Jr/So27
68Mike Dykes 6-4300 Jr/So61

Following the 2009 season, UNC will lose two interior linemen – Lowell Dyer and Aaron Stahl. Still, though, UNC will place most of its offensive line recruiting efforts on tackle prospects.

Keep in mind that tackles who don't pan out on the outside can typically make an easy transition to guard.

Targets With Offers
  James Stone
6'4" 280 lbs. 5.10 Nashville (Tenn.) Maplewood High School
UNC offered Stone last summer. He has also collected offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. He currently favors Alabama, Notre Dame, and Vanderbilt. He camped at Alabama and Tennessee last summer. Stone is a standout student (3.75 GPA and 24 ACT) and says academics will be a key factor in his decision.
