Monday Roy Williams Quotes

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- North Carolina head coach Roy Williams spoke with reporters Monday for his weekly ACC teleconference.

Opening remarks:
"Since last Monday, we've played two road games, and fortunately for us, we got two victories. It was a weird game at Florida, as maybe I said during a press conference last week, and then against N.C. State on Saturday, the first five minutes we didn't play very well and then after that, we had a lot of good moments. We did a great job getting the basketball inside. It was one of those tough days for Sidney [Lowe's] club, but it was a good day for us."

On UNC's bench production:
"I think [not having Marcus Ginyard and Tyler Zeller] has affected us a great deal. All of that spring, summer and fall planning about we're going to be able to do this and that… Marcus is a two-year starter and Tyler started the first two games this year, so you can make the case – to be conservative -- that that's two of our top six or seven guys.

"Bobby [Frasor's] not shooting the ball like he was shooting it before, and most of the people that have that type of injury, the first year that they come back, it's not quite as good as it is later. But he's been really good for us defensively, but hasn't been able to do the things offensively that he's done in the past.

"We haven't been getting the scoring off the bench that we've had since we've been here. We've been bringing Marvin Williams off the bench and we've been bringing Danny Green off the bench, and they've been adding some great things to us offensively, where as now we're bringing Ed [Davis] in, who's usually the first guy off the bench for the [post] positions, and he's giving us defense and rebounding.

"It has changed our team. I laughed in the fall when everybody was talking about and worrying if I had too many players, and I said, ‘No, I just want to make sure I have enough.' I think my concern was more on the mark than the ones worried about too many."

Marcus Ginyard update:
"We still haven't had a chance to visit with the doctors. He hasn't visited with the doctors. Don't hold me to this, but that might even [occur] today or tomorrow."

Where do you want to see more production from your bench?
"The total contribution. It's not just the scoring that people focus on. Danny came in and gave us so much scoring, but we want the guys that come in the game to be effective. We always say you can help us by not hurting us. And if you do some positive things, that's even more [beneficial]. For an example, talking a moment ago about Marvin Williams and Danny Green coming in and positive things happened.

"That's what we've got to get. And I do think we're getting positive things from Ed Davis, and we need someone else to step up and do some of those kinds of things as well. I think if we truly have those guys to step up, then needless to say, that helps make our team a heck of a lot better."
