Williamson discusses walking on

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- It's not a done deal, but Drew Williamson will likely be a member of the North Carolina basketball team in 2003-2004.

I have talked to Coach Doherty [about walking on] -- right now, nothing is official," Williamson said Saturday. "I am still talking to Coach Doherty about it. We are trying to work something out, so maybe so."

Williamson, a 5-11 165-pound combo guard, missed his first game of the season for Burlington (N.C.) Cummings on Friday as he was in Rock Hill for the Shrine Bowl.

Because while the senior is a star on the hardwood, he's an all-state star on the gridiron.

But basketball is the sport he'd play at UNC, as the speedy backcourt standout averaged 23 points per game, six assists, and four steals per game last year for Cummings -- earning a walk-on offer from Doherty.

And what are the odds he is on the Tar Heels' roster next winter?

"Right now, it is a strong possibility," he said.

Williamson is the cousin of UNC 2004 commitment JamesOn Curry, of Eastern Alamance. The two faced off in an epic scoring duel in February. Curry's 40 points were not enough, as Williamson netted 45 for a 94-84 Cummings win.

Williamson was the runner up for Mr. 2-A Basketball to Curry - by one point

As for football, he was last year's Mr. N.C. 2A football and runner-up this season. He is second all-time in N.C. for career touchdowns (116), third all-time for passing yards (9,736) and fifth for yards in a single season (4,189).
