More Hires for Butch Davis' Staff

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- North Carolina's football program will add a new Director of Player Personnel this week, with an additional personnel office hiring expected in the coming months.

Marcus Berry will become UNC's new Director of Player Personnel, replacing Paul Gonnella, who took a position at Tennessee after one season in Chapel Hill.

"I'll be setting up recruiting boards and will be the information guy, just like an NFL scout ..." Berry told the Prince George Gazette of his role at UNC.

Berry, 40, coached a decade (1997-2007) on the staff at Fort Washington (D.C.) Friendly High School, and has had a one-year NFL internship in the front offices of Green Bay (2003) and Jacksonville (2007).

"I want to go after the top kids in this area and bring them to North Carolina," Berry added. "It's an exciting time for football there and I'm excited to be a part of what Butch Davis is doing at North Carolina."

According to sources close to the situation at UNC, Inside Carolina has learned that a secondary hire for personnel is expected to be made this summer. The expected candidate for that position is Brian Overton, who has most recently served in a coordinator role for the North Carolina Shrine Bowl Combines, and has extensive experience in the North Carolina high school coaching ranks.

UNC made decisions last week to hire Troy Douglas from South Florida, Art Kaufman from Southern Miss and Allen Mogridge from Buffalo. Those hirings -- as well as the hiring of Berry -- have not yet been officially announced by the University.
