UNC's Brown named ACC Player of the Week

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina senior Coretta Brown has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for women's basketball after helping 11th-ranked UNC to three victories, two of them against ACC teams. The Tar Heels, now 12-1 overall and 2-0 in ACC play, defeated American 80-42 on Dec. 31, Georgia Tech 72-67 on Jan. 2 and NC State 80-59 on Jan. 5.

Brown averaged 16.3 points and 5.7 assists in the three wins.. She scored a season-high 23 points and played all 40 minutes in UNC's victory over the Yellow Jackets Thursday in Atlanta. Against NC State Sunday, she had 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field. In the conference games, she averaged 20.0 points and shot 65 percent from the field, 66.7 percent (8-for-12) from three-point range.

Brown leads the Tar Heels in scoring this season with 12.8 points per game. A preseason candidate for the Naismith Player of the Year award, she earned All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament honors last season, but this is her first ACC Player of the Week nod.

Florida State's Ganiyat Adeduntan was named ACC Rookie of the Week.

The Tar Heels return to action Thursday, hosting Wake Forest. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium.
