Signee Update: Gene Robinson

With depth needed in North Carolina's secondary, UNC signee Gene Robinson will have an opportunity to see the field this fall.

"They're hoping I come in and play," Robinson said.

"I'm optimistic about [my freshman season]. I feel like I'm a freshman All-American."

Robinson, a 5-foot-10, 163-pound cornerback from Memphis (Tenn.) Whitehaven, says he communicates with Everett Withers, UNC's defensive coordinator, "quite a bit."

"We just catch up," Robinson said. "He lets me know what's going on with him and I let him know what's going on with me."

Robinson current focus is his track season, which is heading into the conference championship. He's a part of Whitehaven's 4x400 relay time.

After track season, Robinson will work out with a personal trainer.

"I want to be in the best shape [possible] when I get [to UNC]," Robinson said.

Robinson says that his qualifying status is "straight" – his core grade-point average and test score matches up on the NCAA Clearinghouse's sliding scale. He plans to arrive on campus on June 14.

Robinson was slated to sport the No. 7 this fall. However, he has recently had a change in heart.

"I brought [wearing No. 7] up to Coach and he said ‘We could make that happen,'" Robinson said. "But I just started thinking about [wearing] No. 1 when I thought about Brooks Foster. I'm going to put the "1" in his ear, if I'm not asking too much."
