Around the Bases with Adam Warren

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Inside Carolina caught up with senior right handed pitcher Adam Warren after the Tar Heels returned to action Tuesday night with a 15-6 win over Elon. Warren made his first relief appearance of the year, pitching two scoreless innings while only giving up one hit.

The New Bern, N.C. native has amassed a 27-4 record in his career in Chapel Hill. This season Warren has been the regular Saturday starter, with a 5-2 record and a 3.19 earned run average. Opponents are hitting .225 against him. He's also the Academic Team Captain for the Diamond Heels, earning many academic awards during his career.

"Adam needs to pitch - those guys have not thrown for eight or nine days, so they need to see some hitters," head coach Mike Fox said after Tuesday's game. "He likes to throw more than probably any pitcher that we have as far as the number of pitches. Him throwing two innings today probably with three days off and pitching again on Saturday worked out pretty good for us.

Warren is in the running for a national honor - the Lowe's Senior Class Award. Online fan voting comprises 1/3 of the total ballots.

"I vote everyday," Fox said. "He has been fluctuating between 19 and 20 percent, so we need everybody to use their text messages - all the free ones they have. He deserves it, he is a Tar Heel, he is a senior and he is a good boy."

Q&A WITH ADAM WARREN

How was it getting back out there after being off for exam break?
"It was a fun experience to get out there and see some live hitters. I had not seen live hitters since Maryland, so it was nice to get out there and feel comfortable, especially with a big lead and not having to worry about them coming back at that point. [It was] perfect for me to go out there and get my mechanics down and see live hitters again."

Have you been following the voting for the Lowe's Senior Class Award?
"I have looked - I try to help myself and vote everyday and I see it. It is a fun thing to be part of. Mark Fleury is what we call my campaign manager. It is just a fun thing to be part of and I am enjoying it."

Can you give us your campaign speech?
"I just feel like I try to do everything right on and off the field and try to be as good a teammate as possible."

How different is the baseball season after the conclusion of final exams?
"I think it is a sense of relief - we just get to focus on baseball. It is the best part of the season, we don't have school to worry about – [just] focus on baseball and that is the only thing we have to worry about. We really look forward to the next month and a half."

What are your thoughts on upcoming weekend series with North Carolina State?
"They are going to bring their best game. We know that and we are not taking them easy because they are one of our rivals. We expect to come out and play it like any other game - like we are playing one of the top teams in the conference."

Can you discuss the rotating system of first base coaches this season on your team?
"From what I gather, they think they produce runs over there so if one comes in and does not produce runs then they think that they have to prove each other wrong and produce runs. It is more of a good luck thing I guess for them. It is kind of funny to see them fight over it - sometimes they don't want to go out there and so they ask who is going to go out there."

Is it true that Coach Forbes has the best statistical performance at first base?
"He thinks so - he really only goes out there once every week or so - I think he thinks that he has better odds that way."

Can you discuss your prowess in picking off base runners - leading the team with five this season?
"I really take pride in holding runners. I have worked on it since I have gotten here and have really improved my move. It has been big for me to pick guys off the basepaths without even having to throw a pitch. I take a lot of pride in it and if I can get a runner off a base it is nice."

A lot of projections have Elon being sent to Chapel Hill in NCAA regional competition. What was it like to get a chance to play against them?
"It was good to get a feel for them - to get a chance to pitch against a regional caliber team was a good experience for me. They have a good team and if we see them in a regional it would be a good matchup."

What was it like seeing the whole weekend rotation getting into the game today, with Matt Harvey pitching and Alex White playing first?
"It was fun. Me and Matt needed work and Alex threw to live hitters on Friday as part of his same routine. When Alex came in the game, Coach Forbes said, 'You better not use your right hand to try to keep the ball in your glove - you better just catch it with your one hand.' It was funny, but Alex likes to get out there whenever he can if it is an at bat or in the field."
