CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- No. 4 national seed North Carolina will host East Carolina at Boshamer Stadium in the 2009 NCAA Chapel Hill Super Regional, the NCAA announced Monday. The Tar Heels (45-16) and Pirates (46-18) will open the best-of-three series Saturday with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
The series kicks off at noon Saturday on ESPNU, with game two slated for noon Sunday on ESPN. If needed, game three will be played Monday at 1 p.m. (ESPN) or 7 p.m. (ESPN2), depending on the results of the other Saturday-Monday Super Regionals.
East Carolina earned a spot in the Supers with a win over South Carolina Monday night in the NCAA Greenville (N.C.) Regional, while UNC swept through the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional to earn its fourth straight Super Regional appearance.
The Tar Heels and Pirates split two regular season meetings this year with each team winning on its home field. Carolina owns 4-1 record in the postseason against ECU, including an 11-10 victory in the 2007 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.
